Gavriel personality type is INTJ, and I can see how that can provoke someone to write off a character as disgusting.But I think the whole thing would be a lot more interesting if Gavriel was presented as a lot less sympathetic, and a lot more villainous (I mean, his entire character arc is a love triangle between him and two other guys, so he's not exactly a great guy). You could give him a darker past, or a more evil side (and if he was still a good guy, I think it would be pretty hard to root for him).
I actually think you could do it. But it might be easier to just write Gavriel as being more calculating and less blatant about being attracted to the same gender. His personality is really just that of an opportunistic person who uses people around him to further his ends. It seems like it would be pretty hard to write him as a villain without making him look really bad.
I wouldn't recommend writing him as a villain though, because then the series would end up with him being the antagonist instead of the protagonist.
