Norton Campbell was born on April 8, 1928 in New York City, New York to Edward Campbell and Gertrude Fitz-Simons. He had one sibling, a sister named Ellen. His family was well-to-do, and he attended schools that were very academic, including St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire. He also studied art at the Art Students League of New York.
Norton began his career as a sculptor, working with his hands. Around the early 1950s, he moved to Los Angeles, California to work as an advertising designer. He worked for several different companies, including the Leo Burnett Agency. He also designed large murals for the UCLA campus.
