I've been a fan of the Fennel since I was a child. The first time I saw a Fennel flower was in a book my aunt had written about her trips to Hawaii. I knew I wanted to grow a fennel (or at least learn how to grow one) and I did. I learned how to grow one in my yard and even considered asking the University of Utah Extension Service to give away seeds to anyone who wanted one. However, when I looked into growing one, I discovered that it would only be grown in the Mediterranean region (and many other places) because it's not native to North America. So, I gave up the idea of having one in my yard (for at least another 10 years).
I got into hiking in 2010 and started looking for places to go that included fennel. Eventually, I found out that the Utah State Parks Department had an old fennel planted in one of the parks. I visited it during my last hike in November 2010 and was disappointed to find out that it no longer had any flowers on it.
