Fukuzawa Yukichi is the son of a nobleman, and grew up privileged. He was trained to be a samurai, and was expected to follow in his father's footsteps. He grew up without many friends, as his peers were all socialized into the Japanese nobility. His father died when he was 17, leaving him with his family to support. He was expected to marry into nobility, but instead chose to leave Japan. He went to study abroad in Germany, and eventually settled in America. He never married, and maintained a low profile to keep his identity secret. He worked as a professor at Columbia University, but was fired after he started writing political essays against the government. He became an activist against the government, and published a newspaper called The New Yukichi Fukuzawa, which was shut down after it was discovered by the FBI.
