The real surprise for me was that Logan is the first person in my life of any significance (other than my son) to have been a person of color. I never knew that would be such a revelation, but it was. He was very different from me in the ways that count. I could never be a light-skinned black man. However, we had much in common, one being that we both loved the idea of being black. We both felt an affinity for the Afrocentric movement and the aesthetic of black people. Although both of us have white European ancestry, we have also been influenced by black culture and have been able to identify as black for a time.
One of the first things that I realized about Logan is that he had a very different view about race than I did. He didn’t like to talk about race or politics. He was very apolitical, and he was very nonconfrontational when it came to race. He didn’t like discussions of race because they made him uncomfortable and they were essentially a waste of time. This was not something that I was used to in my life.
