Kaz was born into a wealthy family of merchants from the Brekker family. His father, Akama, was a trader and a smuggler. Kaz was a poor student, and he spent most of his days practicing with his family's crew, learning how to sail and fight. He was a scrawny youth with a narrow frame and a somewhat sluggish demeanor, but he was an able hand to have on a ship or in a fight. He was not particularly popular among his family, but they valued his loyalty and skill, so this was no great loss. He was raised to be a merchant, but not an adventurer. Kaz joined the Order of the Sunspears at the age of sixteen, and after two years, he left to join the Order of Whispers at the age of eighteen. This was out of his own choice, not because of any orders from his family.
