Lemke was born on May 16, 1969 in Bremen, Germany and grew up in a working-class family. He noticed that he was good at sports from an early age, and he became a top-ranked swimmer in his childhood years. At the age of nine, he started to show an interest in computers and programming, but was not able to pursue it further due to his family's financial problems.
Lemke's parents divorced when he was twelve years old, and he moved with his mother and younger brother to Hamburg. As his mother struggled financially, Lemke had to take on several jobs to help support the family. He also worked at a computer company as a programmer and in a steel factory as a welder. He also served in the German Air Force as an electronics technician.
In 1985, Lemke was fired from the Air Force due to his lack of military discipline.
