Hutchins was born in St. Louis, Missouri and was brought up in Kansas City, Missouri. He was one of nine children. He was educated at the University of Missouri at Columbia and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. During his time at university, he was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. He then spent two years as an intelligence officer with the US Army.
Hutchins began his career in journalism with the Kansas City Star, but he moved to the Chicago Daily News in 1949.
In 1955, Hutchins was hired by ABC News. He was promoted to vice president in 1964, and became president in 1965. Hutchins retired from ABC News in 1977. In 1992, he won an Emmy Award for his reporting on the Vietnam War.
