As a child, Furlong was a notorious prankster who would frequently disrupt his schoolmates' classes by hiding in a desk, or making his way through the school with a bucket of water. He was also known to have a very short temper, and often unintentionally injured or scalded his classmates as a result. This frequently resulted in the use of the principal's office as a place of detention for Furlong. He was also involved in a number of fights at school, although he never suffered any serious injuries from them.
In response to these incidents, Furlong's father, Sonny, began teaching him boxing at age 9.
