The MBTI is based on Jung’s theory of psychological types. The dominant function is the dominant function from the side of the personality that has the greatest “driving strength”. The tertiary, or inferior, functions are the other two functions from the opposite side of the personality, which have equal influence. The second letter in each type name is a clue to the auxiliary and tertiary functions. For example, ISFPs have a strong Se function, and so they also have a strong Si function as an auxiliary function.
