In 1945, the family moved to the United States. In New York, he began to study violin under violinist Efraim Mirsky, and piano under Ivan Galamian. In 1950 he won the first prize of the International Competition of Beethoven in Bonn. In 1953, he graduated from the Juilliard School, and was a student of Gunther Schuller. His teachers included Leonard Rose, Gunther Schuller, and Erich Leinsdorf. He was also a student of Ivry Gitlis and Gunther Schuller. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1954. In 1956, he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship, and won the prestigious Avery Fisher Prize in 1957.
In 1957, he joined the Metropolitan Opera as a member of the company chorus. In 1968, he joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as a member of its chorus and remained there until 1973. He retired in 1978 and became a professor at the Juilliard School in New York City. He died on March 9, 2001.
