My model of the process is that the “raw materials” are the physical world and its common objects, which are the focus of the ESTP’s attention. Once the data is collected, it has to be transformed into something that can be utilized to create something new. This is done through a series of transformations that deal with categorization, formalization, and simplification. In other words, the ESTP is a researcher and engineer of the physical world.
A few illustrations may help to clarify this notion. When I was a kid, I would collect rocks to find out what they were made of. At first, my observations were simple and unstructured: “This is a rock and this is a rock.” But as I grew older and started to do some real research on rocks, I learned that there were many different types of rocks and that each rock had its own characteristics that could be used to categorize them.
