Moreno is one of many Bronx residents taking part in an intensive English-language program at the International School in the Bronx, which is also open to students from Ecuador, El Salvador and Nicaragua.
Moreno has lived in the United States since she was 9 years old, when her family came from El Salvador to escape the violence there. She has been adjusting to her new surroundings and speaking English since last summer. Her grades are good and she has a job as a waitress at a restaurant in Manhattan. She also speaks Spanish, and she can read and write in Spanish and English.
But this is her first year taking classes at the International School and it has been a struggle.
"English, I don't like it," she said. "I like Spanish. I like my English teacher."
Moreno is one of 11 percent of Bronx residents who speak a foreign language other than English at home — and many of them are learning English.
