I'm sure there are better ways of proving this, but I wanted to show the underlying logic of the MBTI's approach to personality types. I'll try to come up with something better later. For now, let's just suffice it to say that the MBTI is not a perfect tool of measurement.
The MBTI is a great tool of measurement, though. The J/P section, for example, is significantly correlated with self-reported extraversion. This is exactly what you'd expect, since extraversion is the dominant dimension of the J/P dichotomy. The J/P section is also correlated with extraversion (but not with introversion), which is exactly what you'd expect given the strength of the J/P dichotomy.
There's also a great deal of self-report data on the MBTI, which I've gathered over the years on various projects (the MBTI scales are actually pretty easy to gather). I haven't tried to test the validity of these findings, but given the results of the tests themselves I'm inclined to believe that they're reasonably accurate.
