Digeri Dingo's story is based on the real-life experiences of many of us who have done what I call "outsider things" or weird jobs, including running a bed-and-breakfast, working as a security guard, and working for the government.
This is not some new phenomenon. Outsider jobs are more common now than they were thirty years ago since the end of the Cold War. When I was growing up, I remember the number of times my mom would tell us to "be careful" on our way to school. All the time she had to tell us not to pick up strangers. She was worried that someone might drug us or abduct us.
Now it's not quite as bad as it was back then, but people are still very concerned about stranger danger. And that is because of the media. What happens is that when there is a problem in the news, people start to panic.
