Functions are the components of personality that are the most abstract and least easily defined. It is useful to think of the functions in terms of the words “tools”, “mechanisms”, and “processes”. These words describe the functions in very different ways, but all of them can be applied to the functions. For example, the word “tool” can be used to describe tools as a noun, or it can be used as a verb, describing how a tool is used. In the same way, “mechanism” can be used as a noun to describe a mechanism as a thing, or it can be used as a verb to describe the process of using a mechanism. In contrast, the word “process” describes a process as a verb, describing what happens when it is used. Types also have processes (when they use their primary or auxiliary functions).
