When The New Yorker first published a cartoon about a man who bought a bed from Ikea and found the box read “IKEA: The Bed That Sucks,” the authorship was attributed to “anonymous.” I’ve been thinking about that cartoon ever since. In it, a man who has just bought a bed from Ikea – and we can assume he’s an ENTP – is pictured ripping open the box. “IKEA: the bed that sucks!” he yells, and we all know what comes next: The picture of the bed, with its utterly mundane features – the construction of the headboard and footboard, the color of the sheets – is then utterly obliterated by a gray smudge that, as the cartoonist puts it, “hides the bed from view.”
