He went to high school in Cincinnati and graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1957. After graduating from college, he joined the U.S. Army. He served for three years as a paratroopers in California, Alaska, and Germany. After returning from the army, he worked in the construction industry.
In 1964, he started his business career with his own business building homes. Later on he expanded his business to buying and selling homes and land. He also started a company called Kiser Construction and Development Company. He was also involved in building shopping centers and office buildings. By the mid-1960s, he had become one of the leading developers in Cincinnati.
