    In 1975, Sandy Burgin earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Oregon. She worked for several newspapers, including the Oregon Journal, before moving to Alaska. There, she worked for the Alaska Journal of Commerce and was editor of Alaska Magazine. She also taught journalism at the University of Alaska Southeast and at Anchorage Community College. In 1978, she earned a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Alaska Anchorage.

    In 1984, while working as a reporter for the Anchorage Times, Sandy Burgin wrote a series of articles about an Alaska Native family who had been abandoned by the state in federal court. The family sued for their return, and received more than $45 million in settlements. Burgin’s articles were published in the New York Times and other national magazines.

    After graduating from college, Sandy Burgin worked as a journalist for the New York Times, serving a total of 16 years.
