I agree with your use of the ISTP descriptions that he would most likely be in the Major mode in this situation. I'm not sure how I feel about your use of the ISTP descriptions, though. To me, an ISTP is not someone who is "functionally dominant" (I don't think I'd use that term at all) but someone who is "dominant in their own world." They aren't necessarily "driving" the situation, but they certainly aren't going to simply go along with whatever is "being done." They would likely do something like: "You're right, I'll help you out and we'll figure out a way for you to get it out."
I feel like an ISTP might be more likely to go with the "guys are uncomfortable with us talking about this" rather than say, "I can see you're frustrated here. If you don't want to confront this issue, I'm okay with that. But I would be very uncomfortable with it if you saw me doing that."
To me, that's how the ISTP personality type works.
