Hwang Woo-yeon is one of Korea’s most prominent and well-known cultural figures. His opera “Madame Butterfly,” which tells the story of a Japanese woman who falls in love with a Korean man, has been performed in many major cities for three decades now.
Hwang Woo-yeon also has a reputation for being a very direct person. In one interview, he was asked about how he felt about a woman calling him on his bluff. He replied that he felt that if a woman was that straightforward, it meant that she was interested in him.
Hwang Woo-yeon was born in Seoul, but later moved to the United States when he was young. He trained as a working actor, and eventually became an opera director, when he was hired by the Houston Grand Opera Company in 1978. He was known as the “opera director of the 1980s”, because of his ability to revive dying opera companies.
The 1986 Houston Grand Opera production of “Madame Butterfly” was such a hit that it was later performed in New York and London.
