The game's events take place in "near-future" Tokyo. The player is a young man named Taro Goto, who is living with his mother in a one-room apartment in the Setagaya ward of Tokyo. His father is an absent-minded professor of English literature at Tokyo University, who has left for an overseas trip. Taro's mother is a former actress whose career was ended by a car accident. Taro is joined by his friend Misuzu, who has a crush on him.
While on a shopping errand, Taro discovers that his father is not in fact overseas, but has been kidnapped by the Yakuza. Some Yakuza members are interested in Taro's father, Keisuke Togami, who has invented a new kind of gravity control device. The Yakuza are also interested in the device because it could be used to create weapons.
The game's story is split into two major arcs, which are divided by segments in which the player must control Taro on his quest to rescue his father.
