As the parent of a child with autism, one of the main issues for me has been finding ways for my child to be accepted, valued and loved by others. As a parent, it has been difficult to find the balance between being a loving, caring and protective parent, and allowing your child to be who they are and to be accepted by others. You want your child to feel included and happy. You want to let them know that you love them unconditionally and want them to feel safe and secure.
One of the best ways that I have found to help support my child’s self-confidence has been to support their strengths and to find ways of helping them to become more independent.
Froggy is very shy and reserved and is not very good at making new friends. As a parent, it is important not to make your child feel different or awkward. It is very important that you let your child know that it is OK to be who they are – that you will support them and encourage them to develop their strengths.
