‘Anzelm’ was born on the 1st of January 1901 in Lublin, Poland. He was the eldest of three children and had a brother named Kazimierz and a sister named Maria. His family came from a German-speaking background and were some of the few that spoke Polish as their first language.
He began his schooling at a German-speaking school. He was then sent to a German-speaking boarding school, where he learnt German and mathematics.
At age eight, he began learning Greek and Latin at a Jewish school where he learnt English and French. He also attended classes at a German-speaking high school. He passed his university entrance exams in both mathematics and physics and began working as a physics teacher in the newly-opened Polish Technical High School in Warsaw.
He married a fellow mathematics teacher, Halina, in 1926. They had two daughters, Halina and Maria.
As a young man, he published 99 research papers on different aspects of physics.
