I was raised in a Jewish household. Jewish values are my values – and how much Judaism I practice is a subject of great debate and contention.
I have some vague memories of growing up near a synagogue. My father was an active member. I don’t remember much about it except that it was there. And, of course, throughout my life I have been a member of the Jewish community. I have been to the Reform temple in Los Angeles and the Conservative temple in Brooklyn. I have been to the synagogue to which my family belonged. I have been to the synagogue where my mother’s family was buried.
I remember my grandfather on my father’s side being a very devout Jew. He was born in Russia, and he was very much a Russian Jew. His family came to America because he was 19 years old and he was very anti-communist and he wanted to become a citizen. After he got here, he went to work for a good company, and eventually became its president.
