The above chart shows the final version of the NEO-PI-R, the most widely used self-report personality inventory. Based on the research of psychologist Carl Jung, the NEO-PI-R questionnaire measures four primary personality characteristics: Neuroticism (N), Extraversion (E), Openness (O), and Perceiving (P). Each of these four characteristics is measured on a nine-point scale ranging from 1 (not at all) to 9 (extremely). The final score is obtained by adding the four scores together and then dividing the sum by 4.
The NEO-PI-R was developed in the 1960s and has been revised several times since then. The current version of the NEO-PI-R, which is used in this article, was developed in the 1990s by researchers at the University of Michigan as an improvement on earlier versions of the inventory that had a somewhat different scoring system.
As noted above, the NEO-PI-R doesn't include any questions about personality type.
