Tobit (in the Book of Tobit) is a devout and wealthy Israelite living among the captives deported to Nineveh from the Northern Kingdom of Israel in 722/721 B.C., suffers severe reverses and is finally blinded. Because of his misfortunes, he begs the Lord to let him die. Instead, the Lord blesses him by healing his blindness after his son Tobias embarks on a journey with the assistance of the archangel Raphael, disguised as a man. Upon returning from the long journey, Tobias rubs the gall of a special fish into Tobit's eyes. Tobit then praises the Lord in song for His mercifully loving faithfulness to His covenant.
