I am writing these words from the apartment where my family used to live before my father fell ill. It is now my apartment, and I live here with my husband and our two young daughters. In the past year, as I have been researching this book, I have had to make decisions about the future of my family. When my father was diagnosed with a terminal disease, I was not sure I could afford to buy this apartment. I had hoped that I could pay for it by selling some of our possessions and using the proceeds to pay for care at a nursing home or a hospital. As my father’s illness progressed, though, I realized that we would not be able to afford the care he needed.
