Doreen Valiente’s Childhood and Family Life
Doreen Valiente was born in 1920 in Liverpool, England. She grew up in a loving family and became an active member of the local community. She was a very talented young woman and earned herself a scholarship to the University of Liverpool.
As a teenager she was active in the Young Communist League (YCL). She was expelled from the party when she joined the women’s section of the YCL and became a member of the National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL).
She then turned to Catholicism and joined the Anglican Church and became an active member. During this time, she continued her passion for writing and became a journalist at the Liverpool Daily Post.
Doreen Edith Dominy Valiente (4 January 1922 – 1 September 1999), sometimes known as the "Mother of Wicca", was an English author who published (or was a contributor to books published by others) a total 10 books, many of them on Wicca. She was the High Priestess of Gerald Gardener (founder of Gardenian Wicca)'s Bricket Wood Coven.
