Éliphas Lévi Zahed, born Alphonse Louis Constant (8 February 1810 – 31 May 1875), was a French ceremonial magician and author of more than twenty books about magic, kabbalah, alchemical studies, socialism, and occultism. Born the son of a shoemaker in Paris, Constant originally trained to become a Catholic priest, but opted out one week before being ordained due to disagreements he had with the church. He spent his next 14 years between teaching, illustrating, contributing to small magazines, and publishing his socialist and religious writings. At the age of 40, after experiencing a tumultuous period in his life, Constant renamed himself Éliphas Lévi and began his career as one of the most influential occultists of the 19th Century.
