Alberts and Stein are the authors of "The Math Gene: Breakthroughs from the world's top math brains on how to multiply your brain," a book that will be published by Dutton on Nov. 2.
The book is about 10 years in the making and includes essays on intellectual milestones and life lessons from mathematicians who have won the Nobel Prize, including Fields Medalist Andrew Wiles and Fields Medalist Peter Scholze.
"I think their essays are so interesting because they're not just talking about how they solved a problem. They're talking about how they worked on problems with their friends," Stein said. "They're giving advice to people who are also working on problems."
Stein said she was interested in math because of her fascination with puzzles and calculation, but she didn't think of becoming a mathematician until she was older.
