The ISTP title was first coined by Isabel Myers in Gifts Differing, and it is a type title, not a personality type title. It has nothing to do with Rational, Intuitive, and Thinking. Myers was trying to illustrate the incompatibility of the functions of the four functions of the INTP and ISTP. The ISTP can be described as more of a "thinking type" than an "intellectual type", and the INTP is more of a "logic-based" type than a "thinking-based" type. But Myers' categorization is misleading because it equates thinking and logic with intellectualism and rationalism. The ISTP does not discriminate between thinking or logic and intellectualism, and the ISTP does not discriminate between thinking and logic and rationality. The ISTP is not a rationalist or an intellectualist, but the ISTP is the type to whom concepts are most important, not rules. The ISTP is not concerned with rules itself, but with how to use rules to achieve maximum effectiveness.
