I think toxic masculinity is a real thing, it’s just not as simple as “boys are bad and need to be fixed”. This is something that has been discussed at length in my own mind for a while now. These thoughts have led me down a path of thinking about toxic masculinity, and this post is going to be going through my thoughts on it.
So what is toxic masculinity? Well, a lot of people will tell you it’s a phrase, but I disagree. Toxic masculinity is a societal standard. A set of expectations that men are supposed to uphold. Breaking the mould of these expectations is seen as a sign of weakness. It is expected that men should not cry, should not ask for help, should be tough and able to fix all of their problems on their own. Toxic masculinity is also all about dominating women. A key point on the list of toxic masculinity is that men are not supposed to show any weakness or emotion towards women, or towards anyone else for that matter.
