Ruby da Cherry personality type is INFP, which is my favorite personality type, so I'm not surprised that she's a great character.
I'm not sure why you even bothered mentioning that the White Mage is a woman. That might be an issue if you're picking a random guy to be the main character, but the White Mage is the only character in the game who is a clear choice for the main character. She's an obvious female main character.
I think you're overrating the importance of the "inferior" skills. The best way to get through most of the game is to focus on combat skills, because most enemies are weak to magic, which is the only offensive/defensive class skill that isn't tied to raising levels. The rest of the game is just about trying to find enough money to buy better gear, which can be done in many different ways.
The game's true ending is not all that bad. I don't think that people should go into this game expecting some deep story, but it's definitely more than just another cookie cutter JRPG.
And yes, I do think this game deserves a score of 8.5. This game is really good.
