The Keans were pacifists before the war. Jack Kean was a conscientious objector during the war. His grandfather, Charles A. Kean, was a veteran of World War I. He was a pacifist who opposed the war in all its forms. His son, Jack, was a conscientious objector who was not permitted to work or attend college during World War II.
In the 1920s, Charles Kean joined the Fellowship of Reconciliation and was an anti-war activist for many years. In 1947, he founded the Committee for Nonviolent Action. In the late 1960s, he helped found the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy and opposed the Vietnam War. He died in 1972.
Jack Kean graduated from Harvard in 1977 and went on to teach philosophy and economics at Yale and Princeton and serve as a Fulbright scholar in South Africa and Slovenia.
