    The band considered Lynott the leader of the band, giving him the title of lead singer. His songwriting was equally important. “It was his songs that made Thin Lizzy what they were,” says Heron. “He really wrote the songs.”

    Lynott’s songwriting ability was evident early on. One of his first songs, “Rattlesnake Shake,” was written for his brother Sean, who was then working as a mechanic for the band.

    “Rattlesnake Shake” was included on Thin Lizzy’s first demo tape, Horslips, which was released in 1971. The song was so well received by the band’s fans that it became a live favorite.

    “When we first started playing ‘Rattlesnake Shake,’ everyone had to dance,” Heron says.

    Philip Parris Lynott (/ˈlaɪnət/, LY-nət; 20 August 1949 – 4 January 1986) was an Irish musician and songwriter. His most commercially successful group was Thin Lizzy, of which he was a founder member, the principal songwriter, lead vocalist and bassist. He was known for his distinctive plectrum-based style on the bass, and for his imaginative lyrical contributions including working class tales and numerous characters drawn from personal influences and Celtic culture.
