    In the early days of Van Halen, Hagar was wearing a “Sammy” wristband, which is a hand tattoo that says “Sammy,” and has a picture of Sammy and his son Michael. When Hagar joined Van Halen in 1979, the band was doing stadium gigs. Hagar kept his bandmates backstage to get ready for their sets. He would come down and run through the songs to get them ready.

    Hagar has said that, when he joined Van Halen, he had his son Michael by his side, and encouraged him to get into the music business. The two of them started their own record company called Curb Records, and signed their son to record a demo tape. He played drums on the demo and gave it to Hagar. Hagar and Van Halen’s producer, Ted Templeman, played it for Warner Brothers who showed interest and signed the band.

    Samuel Roy Hagar (born October 13, 1947), also known as The Red Rocker, is an American rock vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, musician and entrepreneur. Hagar came to prominence in the 1970s with the hard rock band Montrose. He afterwards launched a successful solo career, scoring an enduring hit in 1984 with "I Can't Drive 55".
