"I'm not the type of guy who needed to have my parents around all the time," he says. "I think that actually had a huge impact on me in life in terms of how they related to me. I think that they appreciated the fact that I was able to make it without them."

Carpenter began his musical career with Deftones playing the traditional six-string guitar.
