He was trained by his father, Dick "Ripper" Owens Sr., who was the top professional wrestler in the world in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He wrestled in the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) in 1986, where he wrestled under the ring name "Ripper", winning the World Tag Team Championship with Tony Atlas.
