In the novel "The Hunger", Eldritch is an agent of the "Criminal Investigations Division" (CID) of the United States Government. He has been programmed to "hunt" other people, specifically other human beings, whom he perceives as having transgressed against the law. In one scene, he kills a prisoner who is about to be executed by lethal injection. In another, he kills a woman who is being tortured in a basement by a man with a gun. He does not kill her, however, because he is repulsed by the sight of blood and, according to the novel's narrator, "she was not yet dead." He kills her anyway, but only after she has been tortured and raped.
Andrew William Harvey Taylor (1959) is an English singer, songwriter and musician. He is the frontman and only remaining original member of The Sisters of Mercy, a band that emerged from the British post-punk scene, transformed into a gothic rock band, and, in later years, flirted with hard rock.
Eldritch is well known for his deep and melancholic bass-baritone singing voice as well as his poetic (and sometimes politically charged) lyrics.
The Sisters of Mercy is regarded as a major influence on gothic rock, and Eldritch, with his (former) shock of black hair, bass-baritone vocal style and pale and thin look (with prominent cheekbones), was described in the media as a poster boy for the genre, earning him the label the "Godfather of Goth", which he frequently denies.
