George Melly, who died in 2003 at the age of 75, was a controversial figure in his own time. In his book Gay Like Me he was scathing of the closeted public, describing them as ‘a bunch of middle class queers hiding behind the sanctity of their marriages and children’. He argued that many were not only ashamed of being gay but were also embarrassed about being seen with other gay men in public. He went on to describe how he would go to work with his hand on his boyfriend’s shoulder and everyone would know what he was doing.

Boy George (born George Alan O'Dowd; 14 June 1961) is an English singer, songwriter, DJ and fashion designer. He is the lead singer of the pop band Culture Club. At the height of the band's fame, during the 1980s, they recorded global hit songs such as "Karma Chameleon", "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" and "Time (Clock of the Heart)" and George is known for his soulful voice and androgynous appearance.
