But Kowalczyk said it wasn't so much getting burned as it was the emotional and physical pain he suffered because of it. He said his first burn affected his ability to sleep and later his mental health.
"You know, we all have those moods because we're humans and we're going to get those emotions and you're going to get those thoughts and I was like, 'This is not normal,'" he said.
He was placed on disability and left the fire department.
"I got into all this stuff and I was like, 'You know what? That's not what life is supposed to be like,'" he said.
