The Choice of the Hero
With each new album, Linkin Park writes its own story. This time around, the band was at the height of its fame, but its members were now ready to do something different. The band decided to follow one of its members' dreams and start making music for the animated film, The Iron Giant.
The Iron Giant was based on an early Dave Matthews Band song, "The Iron Giant." Shinoda was chosen to write the theme song because he had written lyrics for the song but hadn't released them. "The song is about a young boy who is looking for his father, and he sees this giant iron robot that looks like Daddy. It's called the Iron Giant, and it's trying to go off and do its own thing."
Although Linkin Park was "a little bit intimidated" by the project, they felt it would be a great opportunity to "be able to make music that may or may not work for another medium. We’ve done it before with ‘One Step Closer,’ which is a song that may or may not work as a movie.
Michael Kenji Shinoda (, born February 11, 1977) is an American musician, singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer and graphic designer. He co-founded Linkin Park in 1996 and is the band's rhythm guitarist, primary songwriter, keyboardist, producer, and lead vocalist. Shinoda later created a hip-hop-driven side project, Fort Minor, in 2004.
