Fagen was described by his friend, John Petkovic, as being very intelligent, tenacious, and driven to succeed. He would regularly out-work others, including fellow band members. As a child he was described as being very intelligent, but also having an underdeveloped social life.
Fagen was largely self-taught musically, although he did receive some formal training in classical piano. He began playing the piano at the age of three, but was not musically inclined until his teens. He eventually studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston with the aim of becoming a jazz pianist.
Fagen has cited the influence on him of several jazz musicians, including John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Art Tatum, Charlie Parker, Ahmad Jamal, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Lennie Tristano, Bud Shank (whom he credits with teaching him how to play jazz piano), and Bill Evans. He has also cited classical music composers such as Mozart and Bach as having influenced him.
Donald Jay Fagen (born January 10, 1948) is an American musician best known as the co-founder, lead singer, co-songwriter, and keyboardist of the band Steely Dan, formed in the early 1970s. He has also released four albums as a solo artist and in 2001 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
