The woman in question was born in Arkansas in 1923 and died in Nashville in 2001. The full story of her life is in the book Five Women: The Lives of Faith and Hope by Mary C. Waters, but the short version is that she was born to sharecroppers and grew up in poverty. Her father was a drunk and her mother was a fierce, severe woman—a perfect fit for a religious fundamentalist who grew up in the same religious culture.
Because Cash was so poor and so child-centered, she became obsessed with finding a husband. She went to college at Fisk University, but dropped out after only one year to marry and raise a family. When she met and married Johnny Cash, she was 28 years old and already a mother of two children. He, on the other hand, was only 21. The two were married for nine years, during which time they had five children. She had two abortions while they were married, which may have been the final straw for him. He left her on their honeymoon.
June Carter Cash (born Valerie June Carter; June 23, 1929 – May 15, 2003) was an American singer, songwriter, actress, dancer, comedian, and author who was a member of the Carter Family and the second wife of singer Johnny Cash. Prior to her marriage to Cash, she was professionally known as June Carter and occasionally was still credited as such after her marriage (as well as on songwriting credits predating it). She played guitar, banjo, harmonica, and autoharp, and acted in several films and television shows. Carter Cash won five Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame in 2009. She was ranked number 31 in CMT's 40 Greatest Women in Country Music in 2003.
