Marty Robbins was born in 1927 in Lake County, Texas, and his mother died when he was five. Nevertheless, his father, a well-known Texas country singer, made sure that Marty had a musical education, and he taught him to play the guitar. Marty left school at 14 and worked as a labourer and cowhand. He then joined the army and served in the US Army Air Forces as a musician and entertainer. When World War II ended in 1945, Marty Robbins returned to Lake County and set out on a full time career as a country singer. He was successful from the outset and by the mid-1950s had built up a large fan base in Texas and neighbouring states. He also enjoyed considerable success as a songwriter.

One of the most popular and successful country and western singers of all time for most of his near four-decade career, Robbins often topped the country music charts, and several of his songs also had crossover success as pop hits.
