Samia was born in Chicago, Illinois, to a young, unmarried mother. Her mother was raised in a strict religious environment, where she was taught to believe that homosexuals were evil and disgusting. She grew up believing that people with homosexuality were a threat to society and that it was a disease that needed to be cured.
At birth, she was given a new name, Samia Finnerty, by her mother, who felt that the name Samia was too similar to her own, and going by her birth name would be too much reminder of who she was before she was born. She was given the nickname "Sam" by her mother, who gave her the name of Samia because she wanted to play the role of mother to Samia.
Her mother then moved to Kansas City, Kansas, where her father had just opened a small business. There, Samia spent time with her father and became attached to him at an early age. Samia grew up thinking of her father as her "father" despite the fact that he was only her legal guardian.
