He started his music career as a child singer with a group called the "Campers" with his brother Geoff and their cousins Spencer and Barry Dean. The group's name was a bit of a misnomer as the group only performed in the summer. The group were based in Blackpool and regularly performed at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom as well as performing at the local youth club. The group also performed as a trio as well as a quartet. In 1966, they recorded a cover version of The Beatles song "She's Leaving Home". The song was released as a single in July 1967 and reached number one on the UK singles chart, selling over a million copies. It was also a hit in Australia and Canada.
