I've wondered why the Myers-Briggs doesn't handle the trait of Personality Type in the same way it handles the trait of Cognitive Functioning. That is, why it doesn't have a third dimension. I've been thinking about this for a long time without ever having come up with a good answer. And, finally, I have.
The answer is "because it doesn't have to." In fact, no particular answer is needed. In this case, it's just a nice image that helps us visualize the thing.
The problem with a third dimension is that it has no inherent meaning. The "normal" way to classify a person by a third dimension is to assign a value to it. The Myers-Briggs does this in a way that produces a sort of "normal" distribution of personality types. It has no meaning other than that.
