Gira never wanted to be a musician, per se. He was born in New York City and grew up in the suburbs of Long Island. As a child, he had a shy and awkward demeanor, so being in front of an audience was not his thing. It wasn’t until he was in college that he fell in love with music. His main inspiration was his girlfriend at the time, who was an aspiring singer/songwriter. She encouraged him to write songs, which he did for the first time in high school. Although he did not consider himself a musician at that time, he was still interested in music.
After graduating from the University of Maryland, Gira moved to Boston to pursue a PhD in philosophy. There were just two things that interested him about the program: the music program at the university and the philosophy department. “I went for the music program because I thought music was interesting and I was interested in philosophy because it seemed like a good way to understand the world,” recalls Gira.
However, after attending his first day of classes, he quickly realized how bored he was with philosophy.
